Painting people is about finding their unique character as it reveals itself to you. It goes beyond the surface features. As a human being, the figure holds a certain innate fascination for me. I am drawn to all the moods one can project in the face and figure. My subjects are friends and strangers that I have observed.

For me abstract (non-representational) painting is the ultimate freedom, freedom from the constraints of other more representational compositions. I begin with some lines and colors or I may adhere some material such as paper to the canvas and from there the work evolves. At some point, the painting seems to suggest to me where to go next. I have done watercolor, acrylic and oil abstract paintings. Each medium has its own characteristics which affect the outcome. My surroundings subconsciously influence the light, shapes, color, textures and compositions I choose.

Everywhere I look there is a painting. I'm fortunate to live and to have lived in decidedly different, but equally breathtakingly beautiful areas. The lakes, woods, fields and seasons of the Midwest and the light, sunsets, mountains and colors of the desert inspire my landscapes. I try to bring some emotional color into my landscapes, colors that may not be there in reality, but that I see. Hopefully when you look at my landscapes, you will feel how I felt when I first saw the scene. I have done some outdoor painting, but I prefer the control I have in my studio working from my own phtographs.
